In today’s global economy, it’s hard to find out where something as complicated as a high-end pair of optics is made. You might think it’s as easy as finding a single factory or looking at where the “Made in” stamp says it was made.

In reality, looking at the stamp only tells you so much. Modern products are made and put together in many different countries, making it hard to find a single country of origin.

Even though that’s true, there are a few things we can break down to clear up some of the confusion.

Setting up Vortex Optics

Daniel and Margie decided to buy a lot of binoculars and sell them to other businesses because they kept working in the optics business and kept in touch with several manufacturers. They started their own optics company called Eagle Optics to grow the business even more. Under the Eagle Optics brand, they made and sold binoculars made in other countries.

In this part of the business, overseas manufacturers were told which features customers at Wild Birds Unlimited’s 300 stores wanted the most. They could start their brand in optics with the money they made from reselling optics equipment. While Margie ran the business the store, Daniel and some of his key employees worked on starting a new business, which they did in 2002 and called Vortex Optics. How Vortex Optics Got Started

Vortex Optics is proud to have been founded in Middleton, Wisconsin. In 1986, Middleton, between Milwaukee and Minneapolis, wasn’t exactly booming, but that’s when Dan and Margie Hamilton opened their first store.

It took almost 20 years, but in 2002 Vortex Optics was no longer just a single store. Dan and Margie Hamilton still own Vortex Optics, but it now has locations worldwide.

It’s the perfect example of the American dream: a business started by a working-class family in a small town that grew into a well-known American brand.

Early years of making things

When Dan and Margie took their retail store to the next level by starting Vortex Optics in 2002, they decided to make their optics in only one country: Japan.

This happened for two simple reasons. First, Vortex Optics wanted the countries in the Asian market because they have relatively cheap labor markets. Second, only the Japanese had the technical know-how to make the high-quality optics that Vortex Optics sought.

Where the production facilities are now

Like many other companies, Vortex Optics makes products in different countries and puts them together elsewhere.

Because of this, Vortex Optics has factories in Japan, China, Korea, the Philippines, and Taiwan, where their binoculars are made. Each factory is good at making its kind of equipment. Not only are some product lines only available in certain countries, but the company that makes them also sends parts of those lines to different factories.

Vortex Optics’ high standards were hard for China to keep up with for a while, so Japanese supervisors, engineers, and optics experts ensured the production facilities met the high standards. Even though they have raised their standards, Vortex Optics only makes their cheaper binoculars there.

Their high-end products, like the Razor HD and the Vortex Golden Eagle, are still only made in Japan.

Vortex Optics was used to make all of their binoculars in Japan. Still, over time, they taught cheaper workers in other Asian countries how to make the same high-end optics they were making in Japan. The two best binoculars Vortex Optics makes still only made in Japan.

Vortex Optics makes about half of its products in China. However, the number of binoculars made in China is much higher than that of other products.

Vortex Optics only makes three lines of binoculars outside of China. Inside China, Vortex makes six different lines of binoculars. These are the lines:

The Philippines is where some Vortex binoculars are made.

Many Americans strongly feel about products made in China. Still, products made in the Philippines don’t usually get the same scrutiny. But from the point of view of Vortex Optic, many of the challenges and benefits are still the same.

They still had to send Japanese supervisors, engineers, and optics experts to the Philippines to ensure they met Vortex Optics’ high standards for quality.

Even though it’s not certain yet, it seems likely that Vortex Optics will move more of its production line to the Philippines. Currently, only one of their lines is made in the Philippines.

Does Vortex Optics Help You See Everything?

We started by saying that Vortex Optics is an American company that represents the American dream. But do they even make anything in America?

Yes, that is the short answer. A few rifle scopes are made in the United States by Vortex Optics. But the answer is a clear “no” regarding binoculars. All of Vortex Optics’ binoculars are made outside of the United States.

In the United States, Vortex Optics engineers these products. In Barneveld, Wisconsin, where Vortex Optics is based, there are more than 200 American workers. The main thing they are in charge of is designing the products, not making them.

So, is Vortex Optics the best example of the American dream if they sent all their manufacturing to Asia? It’s today’s American dream, whether you like it or not.

Don’t focus on where something is, but on how good it is.

Even though there are many reasons why a company might choose one production location over another, that’s not what you should look for. Instead, how well the company makes the binoculars is what matters to the customer.

Even though China is known for making low-quality goods, Vortex Optics deserves credit for keeping its high standards even as it changed where it made things.

Japan still makes better optics, so Vortex Optics makes all its top lines there. Still, the quality of optics from places like China and the Philippines has improved in the past few years.

Just because a brand is called “American” doesn’t mean all its products are made in the United States. More and more goods are being shipped overseas, for better or worse.

The good news for consumers is that this makes products cheaper. Suppose the company does a good job of keeping quality control. In that case, there’s no reason why the quality of the end product should suffer.

When a company does something right, the company and the customer win. It looks like Vortex Optics is doing a good job.

When Vortex moved production of its cheaper models to factories in China, the quality of the first products wasn’t good enough, so Japanese engineers and optics experts had to check on the factories. Over time, the technology improved, and the Chinese workforce was trained to get better optical performance and better quality construction.
