A safari holiday is a real once in a lifetime experience that will be unlike any other adventure you’ve ever been on before. Getting up close and personal with animals you’d only ever be able to see in zoos normally is utterly breathtaking. However, before you jet off on your safari holiday, there are a few safari essentials you’re going to want to do first. Here are five things you need to do to prepare for a safari holiday.
Research where to go
The first thing you’re going to want to consider is what kind of safari experience you’re hoping for, and where you’re going to go! Of course, Africa is the most popular destination for a safari, thanks to The Great Migration and The Big Five. However, you could also go off the beaten track a little with safaris in other parts of the world. What about elephants and leopards in Sri Lanka? Or crocs and jaguars in Nicaragua? Consider what it is you want from your safari holiday to pick the ideal destination for you.
Get the right travel gear
Once you know where you want to go, it’s time to get all of your travel gear together. Number one on this list is a decent camera, but we’ll go into that in more detail later. Depending on the type of safari holiday you’re going on, you might need a whole host of other travel gear. Will you be camping? Will you need anything to make your stay comfortable? How about a travel pillow for the flight? Don’t forget all of the sun protection if you’re heading to Africa – it’s hot, hot, hot!
Protect yourself – just in case
Nowadays, safaris are extremely safe experiences so you shouldn’t encounter any dangers. However, you will still want to cover yourself – just in case. Make sure you have the right type of travel insurance, and they know that you will be going on safari. This will come in handy if anything goes missing or if you end up in hospital. Plus, in some countries, it’s actually illegal not to have travel insurance. It might be a boring thing to think about, but protecting yourself is vital before you set off.
Ensure you bring all of the right things on your safari holiday, as you might be a bit far away from any convenience stores to stock up. You’re going to want to opt for light and airy clothes that will work their magic in the hot weather. A hat and shades are a must, plus a whole ton of insect repellent. Roll your clothes instead of folding them, to give you enough space in your luggage.
Buy a decent camera
Finally, one of the most important things you’re going to need on your safari holiday – an amazing camera! As mentioned, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and so you’re going to want to capture it on film. There are plenty of cameras that are recommended for wildlife photography, so it shouldn’t be hard to find something within your budget. Don’t forget to stock up on memory cards, too. You don’t want to run out of memory halfway through the holiday!
